Why Is Knee Pain So Common?
Knee pain is one of the most frequent complaints we treat in the clinic. It can affect people across all age groups and activity levels. The knee is a weight-bearing joint that takes on significant load during walking, squatting, running, and stair climbing. Over time, it’s not uncommon for pain to develop gradually, or after a specific incident.
What many people aren’t sure about is when to seek help, and what physiotherapy can actually offer.
When Should You See a Physio for Knee Pain?
If your knee pain is hanging around, it’s a good idea to have it assessed. Warning signs include:
- Pain lasting more than a few days
- Discomfort when walking, squatting, or using stairs
- Swelling that doesn’t resolve quickly
- Clicking, locking, or a feeling of instability
- Pain during or after exercise that is becoming more frequent
Early assessment allows you to identify what’s contributing to the problem and prevents it from turning into a longer-term issue.
What Can a Physio Do for Knee Pain?
Your physiotherapist will assess more than just your knee. They’ll look at how your whole lower body is moving, including your hips, glutes, and ankles. Often, knee pain is the result of weakness, tightness, or altered mechanics elsewhere in the chain.
Your treatment may include:
- Hands-on therapy to reduce stiffness or irritation
- Strengthening for muscles that support the knee, including the quads, hamstrings, glutes, and calves
- Balance and control exercises to improve joint stability
- Movement retraining for squats, stairs, or running
- Education about how to load safely, and what movements to modify
In some cases, your physio may also use taping, dry needling, or simple bracing if needed.
Common Knee Issues We Treat
Some of the more common presentations we see include:
- Patellofemoral pain
- Meniscal irritation or tears
- Iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome
- Ligament sprains (ACL, MCL)
- Knee arthritis
- Post-surgical rehab
- Tendinopathy involving the patellar or quadriceps tendon
You don’t need a referral to get started. If your knee doesn’t feel quite right, we’ll help you figure out why and what to do next.
How Long Will Recovery Take?
Recovery depends on what’s causing the pain, how long it’s been present, and your goals. Some cases improve in just a few sessions, especially if caught early. Others, like post-surgical rehab or long-term tendon issues, may require a longer-term plan. Your physio will give you a clear timeframe based on your presentation.
